To work as an official landscaper in your area, you'll more than likely have to first get a license from your state. Many states require landscapers to be licensed, but every state has its own set of requirements to get that license. Check out our guide to the requirements for getting a landscaper license by state.

Why Landscaping Insurance Is Important

Before getting your landscaper license, it's important to first get yourself covered with the right insurance. In many cases, insurance may be required before you can secure a landscaper license. Some of the most common policies included in landscaping insurance are:

  • General liability insurance: Protects you from the cost of lawsuits filed against you by third parties for claims of bodily injury or property damage caused on your premises or by your business's operations.
  • Contractors professional liability insurance: Protects you from the cost of professional errors that may have caused harm to others, resulting in a lawsuit filed against you.
  • Commercial property insurance: Protects you from losses to your business's office space and contents or inventory from many disasters, including fire and theft.
  • Workers' compensation insurance: Protects your employees from the costs of work-related injury, illness, or death caused by their job activities or on the business premises.
  • Commercial auto insurance: Protects you against losses to your company vehicles due to lawsuits, accidents, theft, and other disasters.

You might also need separate coverage for your landscaping tools and equipment. An independent insurance agent can help you get equipped with all the landscaping insurance you need to get working.

Final Word on Landscaper License Requirements by State

Note that even in states where a landscaper license is not required to do general landscaping work, if you'll be dealing with fertilizer, pesticides, or pest control, you'll likely still be required to have various certifications, other licensing, such as a commercial applicator license, or pass exams.

Before accepting any landscaping projects, check in with your local requirements. You might be required to have a landscaping license in your town or city, even if one isn't required at the state level. Stay updated on your state's landscaper license requirements, too, as they may change from year to year.
